Choose a basemap

A basemap provides a background of geographical context for the content you want to display on a map. When you create a map, you can choose the basemap to use. You can change the basemap of the current map at any time using the basemap gallery.

Note:

To access ArcGIS Maps for Fabric, you must have a supported ArcGIS organizational account. By signing in with your ArcGIS organizational account, you can access your ArcGIS Online content as well as your organization's content, basemaps, and ArcGIS Living Atlas layers. You cannot access ArcGIS Maps for Fabric with an ArcGIS Public account.

Select a basemap from the gallery

The basemap gallery includes a variety of choices, including topography, imagery, and streets.

Note:

If you sign in with an ArcGIS organizational account that has a custom basemap gallery you will see that gallery in the Basemap pane.

Tip:

Confirm that your ArcGIS organizational account user type is Creator or higher and that your user role is Contributor or higher in the Microsoft Fabric workspace where you are working to save changes to the map.

  1. Open ArcGIS Maps for Fabric and sign in to your ArcGIS organizational account.

  2. Click Basemap Basemap on the Contents toolbar.

    The Basemap pane appears.

  3. Click the thumbnail of the basemap you want to use in the map.

  4. View information about a basemap in the gallery by first adding it to your map.

    1. At the top of the Basemap pane, click Edit basemap.

    2. On any of the listed reference layers or base layers, click the name of the layer.

The Properties pane appears. This pane displays information about the layer, such as its symbology, transparency, blending, and visible range settings.

  5. Save your map.

Basemap considerations

ArcGIS Maps for Fabric does not display layers on a map without a working basemap because the basemap establishes the coordinate system of the map. Once you save a map with a basemap, ArcGIS Maps for Fabric doesn't revert to a default basemap if yours is unavailable. You can repair a map using a different basemap as long as the spatial reference of the original and new basemap are the same. To repair a map, select a different basemap.
