Add and configure charts

Charts are visualization tools that allow you to display and compare data in a variety of layouts. When creating a chart, you choose a chart type, add data to a table, and configure the chart settings.

There are four chart types: bar, column, donut, and line.

Add charts

You can add charts to stories, briefings, and frames.

  • In stories, you can add charts to the body of a story, sidecar narrative panels, and sidecar media panels. In the body of a story, you can add up to three charts side-by-side.

  • In briefings, you can add charts to briefing slide panels on all slide types except the cover.

  • In frames, you can add charts to frame slide panels on any slide except the cover.

Add chart data

Use the following tips when adding information to the chart data table:

  • Bar, column, and line charts can display up to three data series; donut charts display one data series. All types of charts can contain up to 12 data values per series.

  • Add category labels in the first column of the table. Add value labels in the first row of the table.

  • Category and value labels can be text or numeric. All other cells in the table must have numerical data.

  • Use the arrow keys to move keyboard focus around the data table. Press Enter to turn on or off cell editing.

  • You can paste tabular data copied from other sources into the data table.

  • Click Clear data to remove all information from the table. This is helpful to remove the placeholder data or when you want to start over while keeping the same chart settings.

Bar and column chart settings

The following settings are available for bar and column charts:

  • Chart type—You can change the chart type after creating a chart.

  • Series color—Choose a color for each data series using the color picker.

  • Display multiple series—Choose how to display multiple data series: side-by-side or stacked. This option is only available if multiple data series have been entered in the data table.

Best practices

Consider the following best practices when creating charts:

  • For donut charts, include a small number of categories.

  • Use bar, column, or donut charts for categorical data.

  • Use a line chart for time-series data.

  • Include a data source in Chart options or in the chart caption.

  • Configure consistent value axis bounds for each chart when using side-by-side charts for direct comparison.
