Add and configure infographics

Infographics are visualization tools that present simple data in an engaging layout. You can create the follow types of infographic:

  • Large number

  • Word cloud

Add infographics

You can add infographics to stories, briefings, and frames:

  • In stories, you can add infographics to the body of a story, sidecar narrative panels, and sidecar media panels. In the body of a story, you can add up to three large number infographics side-by-side. Infographics placed in a row must use the same layout.

  • In briefings, you can add infographics to briefing slide panels on all slide types except the cover.

  • In frames, you can add infographics to frame slide panels on any slide except the cover. Only the stacked and basic layouts are available for large number infographics.

Create a large number infographic

To create a large number infographic, provide a number, short description, and icon; choose an infographic layout; and configure display settings.

There are four layouts:

  • Basic—Center-aligned number and description

  • Stacked—Center-aligned icon, number, and description

  • Compact—Side-by-side icon and number above a center-aligned description

  • Titled—Center-aligned description above an icon and number

Tip:

Use the following tips to create effective large number infographics:

  • Use an abbreviation for long numbers; for example, type 27M instead of 27,000,000.

  • A description should be concise, ideally no longer than two lines.

  • You can use a short word instead of a number.

  • Use the basic layout when an icon isn't needed.

Large number settings

The following settings are available for large number infographics:

  • Layout—You can change the layout after creating an infographic.

  • Colors—You can choose colors for each aspect of the infographic using the color picker: number, description, icon, and background.

Tip:

Choose a background color that provides sufficient contrast with other infographic elements. See Accessibility in ArcGIS StoryMaps.

Create a word cloud infographic

A word cloud is a representation of a long selection of text that displays words in different font sizes by their relative frequency.

Word cloud settings

The following settings are available for word cloud infographics:

  • Colors—Choose colors for the infographic text and background using the color picker.

  • Direction—Choose from Horizontal, Orthogonal, or Multidirectional.

Infographic options

You can use the Data source option to enter text to credit the data source for the infographic. Readers can see the data source by hovering over the information icon shown in the top corner of the infographic.

Resize infographics

In a story, to change the size of a block, hover over the block and click Small, Medium, or Large. Alternatively, you can choose Float left or Float right to position the block on one side of the page and have text flow around it.

Best practices

Keep the following in mind when making infographics:

  • Choose an icon that relates to the theme of the data value represented.

  • Consider including a data source in Infographic options.
