Add and configure timelines

You can add a timeline to illustrate a series of chronological events or as an engaging way to present a list of items.

Timelines have three layout options:

  • Waterfall—Events are vertically centered on the timeline

  • Single side—Events are all placed along the same side of the timeline

  • Condensed—Event dates and descriptions are placed on opposing sides of the timeline

For each event in the timeline, you can add a time or date, description, and image. You can reorder the events in the timeline and add or delete events. A spacer can be added to indicate an extended period of time between events.

Add timelines

You can add timelines to stories to the body of the story or a sidecar narrative panel.

Use the following steps to add a timeline:

  1. Click the Add content block button to open the block palette.

  2. Select Timeline.

  3. Choose a timeline layout.

A timeline with two empty events is added in the story.

    Note:

You can change the layout later from the Options menu. The condensed layout cannot be used in sidecar narrative panels.

  4. Enter information for the first two events.

Each part of the event is optional.

    1. Click the Time or date placeholder and enter a time or date.

    2. Click the Description placeholder and enter a description.

    3. Hover over the event, click Add image, and choose an image to upload.

    Note:

Uploaded image files must meet the media file requirements.

  5. Click the Add content block button to continue adding events or spacers as needed.

A timeline is added to the story.

Events can be reordered or deleted using the controls that appear when you hover over an event.
