ArcGIS StoryMaps assistant (preview)
ArcGIS StoryMaps assistant (preview) contains the following capabilities that use artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the process of creating content with ArcGIS StoryMaps:
Suggest alternative text—Suggests alternative (alt) text by analyzing an image.
Summarize a story—Analyzes the story content and provides information including a summary and a classification of its tone, sentiment, estimated reading time, readability level, and more.
Refine your writing—Regenerates selections of text, adjusting aspects such as tone, length, and grammar.
Generate a theme—Creates a custom theme based on keywords, a description, or an image.
Note:
Your ArcGIS Online administrator must configure assistants before you can access ArcGIS StoryMaps assistant (preview). You must also have the privilege to use AI assistants.
The assistant's capabilities are supported only in English.
Capabilities
The following sections describe how to use each capability of ArcGIS StoryMaps assistant (preview):
Suggest alternative text
Use the following steps to get alternative text suggestions:
Open a story in the story builder.
Upload an image or provide a link to an image on the web in the story builder.
Hover over the image and click the Options button.
Click the Accessibility tab.
Click the Suggest button.
The image is analyzed and alternative text is generated. You can edit or discard the suggested alternative text.
Summarize a story
Use the following steps to summarize a story:
Open a story in the story builder.
Click the Insights button in the header.
You may have to wait a few moments for the summary to generate.
The About this story section presents an analysis of the story content. It provides a summary and the tone, sentiment, word count, estimated reading time, readability level, languages detected, keywords, and places mentioned in the story.
Click the Update item description button to update the description section of the ArcGIS item details page with the information from this section.
Note:
The summary information is only generated if your story contains more than 100 words.
Refine your writing
Complete the following steps to refine a selection of your writing:
Open a story in the story builder.
Select some text, and click the Refine button.
Note:
The Refine button is not available for shorter text elements such as headings, captions, quotes, and credit entries.
Optionally, click the Update text selection button to expand the current text to include the current paragraph or section. Expanding the selection to the current section will include all text above and below your current selection up to a heading or piece of media.
Select one of the actions—Enhance, Summarize, Change tone, or Fix grammar—to update your writing.
After using one of the tools, you can run others as needed. The text provided by the assistant is shown after each step. Use the buttons above each section to rerun a previous action, copy the text to the clipboard, or remove it.
When you're finished, click Replace to replace the original text with the result, or click Insert to add the updated text before or after the original text.
Generate a theme
Complete the following steps to generate a theme:
Visit the ArcGIS StoryMaps content page.
Click Create, then click Theme.
The theme builder launches.
Click the Generate theme card from the Select a starting point options.
Enter a phrase or set of keywords to describe the theme you want to create in the Describe your theme text box.
Optionally, click Add image to upload an photograph, logo, or other image that contains colors, fonts, and stylistic elements you would like to incorporate into the generated theme.
Click Generate.
A theme is generated with suitable colors, fonts, basemap, and block styles to match the description provided.
Click Regenerate to get other suggestions, or click Save and edit to accept the suggestion and continue editing the theme.
Credits
Using ArcGIS StoryMaps assistant (preview) does not consume credits.
Feedback
To provide feedback, click the Help button in the header and choose the Feedback option. Your feedback may be used to guide additional development of the assistant.
Security and privacy
ArcGIS StoryMaps assistant (preview) aligns with the following principles:
Prompts are not used to train Esri or third-party AI models.
Prompts are not used to improve any Esri or third-party product or service.
Prompts are not stored or shared.
Prompts are not used to improve the assistant for your own use.
AI transparency cards are available with more security and privacy details.
Limitations and bias
An ArcGIS Online organizational account is required to access ArcGIS StoryMaps assistant (preview). Other account types, such as public accounts, are not currently supported.
Suggestions generated using artificial intelligence can be misleading or inaccurate. To avoid potentially reinforcing any unintentional biases in the AI models used by ArcGIS StoryMaps assistant (preview), human judgment should be applied to interpreting and acting upon the assistant's outputs.
