Visualizing, processing, analyzing, and managing imagery and raster data are an important part of GIS. Information contained in typical land base maps and GIS layers is derived from imagery and raster data. Existing maps and layers are revised based on updated imagery.

Observation Workbench

An Observation Workbench is an imagery-based working environment that is ready for observation collection. The workbench is a map view that contains many of the data elements needed to exploit imagery, including orthorectified image layers for collecting observations with a higher degree of geospatial accuracy.

Image Space Analysis

When a sensor collects a picture and forms an image, it captures the scene in perspective geometry. As a result, the image has its own unique mapping of the 3D world into that specific 2D image. For remotely sensed images, this geometry is described in a sensor model that accompanies the image in the metadata. The perspective mode of the map view display provides the capability to display oblique imagery in an image coordinate system, called image space, rather than a map coordinate system to enable more intuitive image interpretation. It facilitates seamless transformation between an image coordinate system (ICS) and map coordinate system to display, interpret, collect, and edit GIS feature data on the perspective imagery.

Image Mensuration

Measuring ground features in imagery, called "image mensuration", is an important function in many image interpretation or feature compilation applications. Image mensuration is defined as applying geometric rules to determine distance, area of a 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional surfaces using the information obtained from lines and angles. It also includes measuring the height and absolute location of a feature.

To meet this requirement, the NITF was designed to allow you to store a variety of data types with image support data (ISD) in a single file.

Synthetic Aperature Radar (SAR)

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) employs unique remote sensing techniques. The SAR sensor is mounted on an airplane or satellite and points sideways instead of straight down (nadir). It is an active sensor that sends electromagnetic waves to the earth's surface and receives the reflected signal. The electromagnetic wave received by the sensor is called the measured backscatter. A SAR image is a 2D rendering of the measured backscatter.

NetCDF (network Common Data Form) is a file format for storing multidimensional scientific data (variables) such as temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed, and direction. Each of these variables can be displayed through a dimension (such as time) in ArcGIS by making a layer or table view from the netCDF file.

Motion Imagery

The geospatial video capability in the ArcGIS Image Analyst extension allows you to include motion imagery and video and provides playback and geospatial analysis capabilities for metadata compliant videos. Geospatial video refers to the combination of a video stream and associated metadata into one video file, which makes the video geospatially aware. The sensor systems collect camera orientation, platform position and attitude, and other data and encode it into the video stream so that each video frame is associated with geopositional information.
