Configure feature search for scenes

You can use search to find locations such as addresses, places, or points of interest. To make it easier for users to locate features in scenes, you can also configure specific layers in the scenes to be searchable. The following layer types are available for search:

  • Hosted feature layer

  • Hosted scene layer with associated feature layer

  • ArcGIS Server feature service layer

  • ArcGIS Server map service layer

When there are layers in the scene that are configured for search, users can search for specific features. For example, they can search for an underground utility ID, and Scene Viewer will zoom to the utility, highlight it, and display a pop-up about the asset.

To configure layers in a scene for searching, complete the following steps:

  1. Verify that you are signed in to your organization.

    You must be the scene owner or an organization administrator to configure search for layers in the scene.

  2. Open the item page of the scene you want to configure for feature search.

  3. Click the Settings tab and click Web scene to scroll to that section.

  4. Turn on the Enable search toggle button.

  5. Optionally, provide hint text that will appear in the search box.

    This text instructs the user what type of information to provide when searching, such as Name or Address.

    The hint text is the same for all the layers configured for search.

  6. Turn on the By layer toggle button.

    By default, the first layer in the scene is displayed.

  7. Optionally, choose a different layer from the drop-down menu to configure for search.

  8. Choose an attribute field in the layer that users can search.

    Note:

    For a field to be searchable (and appear in the drop-down menu), it must contain strings or integers and not use a coded domain. For the best search results, choose a field with unique values.

  9. Choose whether the result will contain or be equal to the search terms.

    Integer and big integer fields only support the Equals option.

  10. Click Add layer to enable feature search for other layers in the scene or other fields in the same layer, and repeat steps 7 through 9.

  11. Click Save.

Feature search is enabled for the scene. Others can use the search box at the top of Scene Viewer to find features in the layers you configured.
