Add data to a map

In ArcGIS Maps for Fabric you can create maps that include data from your lakehouse in Microsoft Fabric as well as contextual layers from your ArcGIS Online organization or ArcGIS Living Atlas.

Add data from your lakehouse in Microsoft Fabric

ArcGIS Maps for Fabric supports a variety of data formats like GeoJSON, Parquet, and CSV layers. If you add a CSV layer to your map, the file must include location fields that contain latitude and longitude coordinates. Parquet data must either include location fields that contain latitude and longitude coordinates or be formatted as GeoParquet. GeoJSON data include spatial location information inherently.

To connect to your lakehouse and add layers in ArcGIS Maps for Fabric, complete the following steps:

  1. Open ArcGIS Maps for Fabric and sign in to your ArcGIS organizational account.

  2. On the Contents toolbar, click Add data Add and click Add data from Lakehouse Add data from ArcGIS Online to search for data hosted in Microsoft Fabric.

    The OneLake catalog opens.

    Note:

You can also add data from the Add data dropdown menu on the Layers pane.

  3. Select a lakehouse from the OneLake catalog.

  4. Optionally, do any of the following to help you find layers:

    • Expand the Explorer menu Expand to find lakehouses in another workspace.

    • Type search terms in the Filter by keyword Filter by keyword box.

    • Filter data by clicking on one of the category buttons. You can choose from the following categories:

      • Click Endorsed by your org Endorsed to select authoritative data designated by organizational administrators.

      • Click My data My data to select data from lakehouses you created. Learn more about how to Create items in workspaces or add data to your lakehouse.

      • Click Favorites Favorites to select from data you have identified as a favorite by clicking the star next to the file name in your workspace.

      • Select All All to show all available lakehouses in your workspace.

    Note:

You can only add data from workspaces that you have permission to access. Contact the workspace owner if you would like to add data that is in a workspace you do not have permission to access.

  5. Click Connect to open the lakehouse and view the files it contains.

  6. Click the radio button next to the file you want to add to your map. Click Add To Map.

If you add a CSV file as a layer you may be prompted to optionally update the following information:

    • Update Display name and Type for the fields in your dataset. Click Next to accept the field settings.

    • Confirm or change the Location settings for your data. Specify the type of location information your file contains and select Latitude and Longitude fields from your dataset. Click Add to map.

A new layer appears on to your map.

  7. Repeat the previous step for each layer you want to add.

You can style layers added from your lakehouse using the menu options from the Settings toolbar.

    Note:

Some settings are unavailable for layers created from your lakehouse data. For example, you cannot Duplicate Duplicate these layers from the Layers pane Layers, but you can add a duplicate dataset by repeating the process described above.

  8. To remove the layer from the map from the Layers Layers pane, open the item's Options menu Options and select Remove Remove.

Browse and add content from your ArcGIS organizational account

You can access content from your ArcGIS organizational account in ArcGIS Maps for Fabric by signing in. To add information to the map, search for layers from your content, your favorites, groups to which you belong, your organization, or ArcGIS Online as follows:

  • My content—Layers you own.

  • My favorites—Layers you have marked as favorites.

  • My groups—Layers from groups to which you belong.

  • My organization—Layers from your organization.

  • ArcGIS Online—Layers you have added, layers from groups to which you belong, and public layers.

  • Subscription content—Ready-to-use map layers and services that have been purchased for your organization from ArcGIS Marketplace.

    Note:

ArcGIS Marketplace will be retired in the first quarter of 2027. The ArcGIS Marketplace website was shut down in March 2026. See the ArcGIS Marketplace Retirement article for details.

When searching for layers to add to the map, you can change the way you display results and sort and filter the results to help you find the layers you need. You can also view details about each layer to learn more about it before adding it to the map.

To find and add layers from ArcGIS Online to your map in ArcGIS Maps for Fabric, complete the following steps:

  1. Open ArcGIS Maps for Fabric and sign in to your ArcGIS organizational account.

  2. On the Contents toolbar, click Add data Add and click Add data from ArcGIS Online Add data from ArcGIS Online to search for spatial layers.

    The Browse layers pane opens.

    Note:

You can also add data from the Add data dropdown menu on the Layers pane.

  3. Choose where you want to search for layers: My content, My favorites, My groups, My organization, Subscription content, or ArcGIS Online.

  4. Optionally, do any of the following to help you find layers:

    • Type search terms in the search box.

    • Click Filter Filter to sort the layer results, change the sort direction, and narrow the search results.

The filter options available depend on where you are searching for layers, and how you are signed in.

      Note:

To limit results to the current map extent, turn on Only show content within map area. For example, if the map is zoomed to Nevada, USA, results are prioritized by that extent. Changing the extent to Pennsylvania typically produces different results, depending on your keywords. The search returns all matching layers that overlap the current map extent.

    • For items in My content, click My content. The list will populate with available layers.

    • For items in My groups, click My groups. The list will populate with available layers.

    • Click the title of an item to open the item pane. In the item pane, expand Overview, Description, and Details to learn more about the item.
