Create sketch layers

In ArcGIS Maps for Fabric, you can create features on a map by creating a sketch layer. A sketch layer is a type of feature collection. When you Create a sketch layer, you create features to symbolize something you want to show on the map. You can also add descriptive information that appears in pop-ups when the feature is clicked.

The features in a sketch layer are saved with the map so that only you, the map author, can edit and save them. Creating a sketch layer is a good way to add a small number of features to a map, for example, the site for a new store location.

There are six types of features you can draw in a sketch layer: points, lines, polygons, rectangles, circles, and text.

Create a sketch layer

To create a sketch layer, complete the following steps:

  1. Follow the instructions for any of the following sketch tools to add features to the map:

  2. Optionally, click Sketch settings and change any of the following options:

    • Turn on the Enable tooltips toggle button to show feature dimensions while drawing sketch features.

      Note:

Tooltips must be enabled to set editing constraints when drawing features. Editing constraints allow you to type coordinates for points, and direction and distance values for line and polygon segments.

To set editing constraints while drawing features, press Tab, then enter a value in the input field. Press Enter to set the editing constraints for that point or segment. Press Tab to navigate between input fields. Click Lock constraint to turn off editing for an input field and click Unlock constraint to turn on editing for an input field. For point features, enter coordinate values, then press Enter to place the point on the map. For line and polygon segments, click Direction mode and select Deflection or Absolute to change the directionality setting. When you get to the end of the new line or reach the starting point of the polygon, double-click that location on the map to complete the drawing.

    • TTurn on the Enable segment labels toggle button to show labels indicating the length of each segment.

    • Turn off the Enable snapping toggle button to disable snapping.

      Tip:

Snapping provides visual guides that help you draw shapes—for example, draw at right angles or draw straight lines—and allows you to place features directly on the edges and vertices of features.

      Note:

It is recommended that the map and editable layer be set to the same spatial reference when performing snapping. Previously snapped features may appear with space between the vertices when zoomed in to a small extent if the map and editable layer are defined by different spatial references.

    • Turn off the Geometry guides toggle button to disable the visual guides that appear when you are drawing or updating sketch features—for example, guides that help you draw right angles and straight lines.

    • Turn off the Feature to feature toggle button to disable the ability to snap to the vertices and edges of other features while drawing and updating sketch features on the map.

    • Turn on the Grid toggle button to overlay a customizable grid to help guide feature drawing and placement.

    • If snapping is enabled, click Snapping layers and select additional layers in the map to allow snapping to features in other feature layers when drawing and updating sketch features.

      Tip:

Feature-to-feature snapping can be used with hosted feature layers and with WFS, CSV, and GeoJSON layers.

    • If the grid is enabled, click Grid options and do any of the following:

      • Under Placement, click Place to position the grid, click Move to change the origin of the grid, and click Rotate to rotate the grid on the map.

      • Enter values for Spacing (in feet), Angle (in degrees), and Cells between major lines to customize the grid layout.

      • Turn off the Dynamically scale grid based on zoom toggle button to prevent the grid from rescaling when zooming in and out.

      • Turn off the Rotate grid with map toggle button to prevent the grid from rotating when rotating the map.

      • Under Theme, choose a grid theme (dark, light, or custom) to customize the appearance of the grid on the map.

      Note:

When overlaying a grid, distortion may affect the grid spacing. For basemap projections with high distortion, such as Web Mercator, the Spacing option will be unavailable.

  3. To add a title to the sketch feature, under Feature name, type a title in the text box.

The feature title appears when viewing the list of sketch features in the Properties pane.

  4. Optionally, add pop-ups to the sketch features.

  5. Close the Sketch pane when you are finished.

The sketch layer appears in the Layers pane. A list of all features in the sketch layer appears in the Properties pane .

Tip:

To add more sketch layers to the map, Click Add data Add on the Contents toolbar and choose Create Sketch layer Sketch.

Draw a point

You can use points to symbolize places of interest on a map. For example, you can use special symbols to represent hospitals, evacuation points, or hiking trails.
