Set layer properties

The Properties pane in ArcGIS Maps for Fabric provides information about the layers in your map as well as quick access to several layer configuration options, such as blend modes, transparency and visible range.

By signing in to an ArcGIS organizational account, you can include layers owned by other ArcGIS users in and outside your organization in your maps. These layers are typically prepared for immediate use with styling, pop-ups, and other properties configured by their owners

Note:

To access ArcGIS Maps for Fabric, you must have a supported ArcGIS organizational account. By signing in with your ArcGIS organizational account, you can access your ArcGIS Online content as well as your organization's content, basemaps, and ArcGIS Living Atlas layers. You cannot access ArcGIS Maps for Fabric with an ArcGIS Public account.

Regardless of the source of your data, you can customize the properties of layers in your map to suit your needs. By default, any changes you make to the properties of layers in your map are stored in the ArcGIS web map when you save it. This means that if you customize the properties of a feature layer you don’t own, any changes the layer owner makes to the layer properties in the future will not be reflected in your map.

The sections below describe how to view and manage feature layer properties in your map.

Manage feature layer properties

Any changes you make to the properties of feature layers in your map are stored in the map and remain disconnected from the source layer. This means that future changes to those properties in the source layer are not reflected in your map.

For example, suppose your map has a feature layer of census data from ArcGIS Living Atlas. The ArcGIS Living Atlas layer has a custom style and pop-ups configured, but you want to modify the style to use a different color ramp. If you save the map, the new color ramp is stored in the map and disconnected from the style property of the ArcGIS Living Atlas source layer. This means that your color ramp change doesn’t change the color ramp of the ArcGIS Living Atlas layer, and any changes to the color ramp in the ArcGIS Living Atlas layer will not appear in your map. Other properties in the ArcGIS Living Atlas layer, such as pop-ups, continue to be inherited from the source layer until they are otherwise configured and saved in your map.

Tip:

If you want to maintain the original layer author's styling but you also want to present an alternative perspective on the same data, you can duplicate the feature layer and save its style settings in the map.

Do the following to configure layer properties:

Tip:

Confirm that your ArcGIS organizational account user type is Creator or higher and that your user role is Contributor or higher in the Microsoft Fabric workspace where you are working to save changes to the map.

  1. In ArcGIS Maps for Fabric, open the map containing the layer, or add the layer directly.

  2. On the Contents toolbar, click Layers Layers if the Layers pane is not open.

  3. Either click the Options Options button and choose Show properties Show properties or select a layer from the Layers pane and click Properties Properties on the Settings toolbar.

    The Properties pane opens.

  4. In the Properties pane, do any of the following:

    • Under Symbology, turn off the Show in map legend toggle to remove the layer from the legend view.

    • If you’re map shows multiple layers in relation to one-another, Use blend modes to adjust the way the layers appear together. Under Appearance select Blending options from the dropdown menu.

    • Under Appearance increase the layer’s Transparency by moving the slider to a position corresponding to a greater percentage. For more information see Set transparency and visible range.

    • Under Visible range drag the handles to adjust the scale range that your layer is visible in. For more information see Set transparency and visible range.

    • Adjust the Feature display order by selecting an option from the Order by dropdown menu. For more information see Set the feature display order.

In ArcGIS Maps for Fabric, you can adjust the feature display order for feature layers you have added to your map from your ArcGIS organizational account, from ArcGIS Living Atlas, or for Parquet or CSV data you have added from your Lakehouse.

  5. When finished, close the Properties pane.

  6. On the ribbon menu, click Save Save and select Save or Save as from the dropdown menu to save your changes to the layer properties.
