Accessibility in map layers
When selecting relevant map layers, focus on your target audience’s objective:
What questions are they trying to answer?
What task are they trying to complete?
Select only the layers that directly support that goal and remove layers that do not contribute meaningful information. Reducing unnecessary layers simplifies navigation, minimizes visual noise, and reduces cognitive load, especially for individuals with cognitive, neurological, or attention‑related disabilities.
Where possible, configure the map so the essential information is available without requiring users to turn layers on and off. Each visible layer should clearly address a known audience need or question. If a layer does not provide distinct value, consider removing it. A focused set of layers improves comprehension, supports those using assistive technology, and makes the overall map purpose more clear.
Provide data visualization alternatives
Even when you limit layers to task‑relevant data, some audiences may still benefit from alternative ways of viewing or interpreting information. Consider visualization techniques that reduce clutter or offer additional encoding without adding more layers. For example, using semitransparent masks can de‑emphasize background features and help key data stand out, while preserving geographic context.
You may also offer optional style variants that use dual encoding—such as patterns, textures, or line styles—to complement color. These pattern‑based layers can be enabled as needed and help support individuals with color vision deficiencies or low vision.
In addition to visual alternatives, consider providing access to the same data through tables, charts, or narrative descriptions so individuals can choose the format that works best for them.
