Terminology

Learning the terminology below will facilitate learning how to use ArcGIS Documentation Center.

Documentation set

A documentation set is a package of documentation for a specific product, product version (if applicable), and language. For instance, the folder containing the complete documentation in Japanese for ArcGIS Pro 3.7 is a documentation set. The complete documentation for ArcGIS Reality Studio 2026.1 in German is another documentation set.

Local server

The local server is a web server running on your machine that can be accessed only by the user of the machine it is running on.

ArcGIS Documentation Center starts a local server and displays documentation sets on a browser that references the local server.

Root folder

The root folder is the location on a local or network drive where documentation sets are stored. The Home tab references this folder to display the documentation sets that are available there. The local server also references this folder to serve the documentation sets that are stored there.
