Promote and publicize

Once you have published an ArcGIS StoryMaps item, the next steps are to promote and publicize it. There are different promotion options available depending on how the content is shared.

  • Items shared with everyone appear in web search results and can be publicized by doing any of the following:

    • Sharing links through messages, email, or on websites

    • Posting on social network platforms

    • Embedding in websites

  • Items that are not shared with everyone require viewers to sign in and have more limited promotion options.

Published content items shared with everyone have a Share menu in the header that you and others can use to copy shareable links, share items directly to social media sites, or copy code snippets to embed the item in a web page.

Note:

If you want to discourage others from sharing your content items, you can hide the Share menu in the item settings, but this will not prevent others from sharing your public content using its link.

If you are using ArcGIS Enterprise, an administrator must enable the Share menu globally in the organization settings. Once enabled for the portal, the Share menu can then be hidden in Settings for any individual item.

When an ArcGIS StoryMaps content item is shared with everyone, web search engines (such as Google, Microsoft Bing, and others) can find and promote your work. Your content will be indexed and appear in search results, when applicable. For information about optimizing your content's discoverability, review search engine documentation such as Google's Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Starter Guide.

If you have a subscription account and do not want your content to appear in web search results, you can opt out of this service when publishing.

Content items created using public accounts are not indexed by search engines and never appear in web searches.

Anyone can also find your publicly shared ArcGIS StoryMaps items through a search on the ArcGIS Online website.

Anyone can copy the URL of an ArcGIS StoryMaps item from the browser's address bar to share it. Other ways to copy a shareable link are described below.
