Use templates

You can use templates you have created or templates created by someone else. The steps to use a template are the same in both situations.

Use the following steps to use a story template:

  1. Visit the ArcGIS StoryMaps content page.

  2. Browse or search for the template you want to work with.

  3. Click the template to open it in the template builder.

The template builder launches, and the banner message indicates you are working on a template.

  4. In the template builder header, click the Create story from template button.

This creates a new story and opens it in the story builder. Any edits you make will be applied to this new story item and will not affect the template. For more information on authoring stories, see Create a story

  5. Add or update information on the cover.

  6. Follow the template structure and any instructions that have been provided by the template author.

Instructions may appear in the story body as outlined text boxes with the instructions icon in the top left corner.

    Note:

Once you finish your story and publish it, the Instructions blocks will not be visible in the published version. They do not need to be deleted or altered before publishing.

Some templates will include all directions inside Instructions blocks, but other templates may include instructions or placeholders in the narrative text for you to add to or replace.

  7. Check that all necessary changes have been made and information inside Instructions blocks has been addressed.

  8. Click Preview in the builder header to open preview mode.

    Note:

Instructions are hidden when previewing a story created from a template.

  9. Return to the builder by clicking Close preview on the preview toolbar.

  10. Click Publish to begin the publishing process.

Your story is now published and ready to be shared.
