Add Points

A point feature is a single point on a map used to represent buildings, events, or entry control points.

Description

Creating a point feature helps identify a single point of focus on an map. This workflow teaches how to add points to a project, use the edit pane, and how to edit fields.

Tools and commands used

Steps

  1. Click the Map tab

  2. Click Edit in the Features group.

  3. Click the Edit tab.

  4. Click New Point Layer in the New Features group.

    A point feature class appears in the Contents pane. Edit mode enables and the Edit tab and Edit Feature pane appears.

    The line tool activates and the Construction toolbar appears.

  1. Click on the map to add a point.

  2. Right-click the point feature class in the Contents pane.

  3. Click Save .

    The feature class is saved in the project's geodatabase.

    While any pending edits are still waiting to be saved, a red line appears around the edges of map. The feature class is stored in a geodatabase, the red line indicates there are current edits within the feature class that must be saved.

  4. Click Save Edits on the Mapview toolbar.

  5. Click Select by Rectangle on the Edit tab.

  6. Select the point feature on the map.

  7. Type a name for the feature in the Label on the Edit Feature pane.

  8. Click Edit Fields .

    The Fields view opens with the map view and a Fields tab opens on the ribbon.

  9. In the Fields view, click in the last row in Click here to create a new field.

  10. Type a new Field Name.

  11. Choose a Data Type.

  12. Optionally, type a field alias in Alias.

  13. Click the Fields tab.

  14. Click Save in the Manage Edits group.

  15. Click Edit Fields pane.

    The new fields are added to the Edit Fields pane and can also be edited on the Edit Feature pane.

  16. Click Fields tab

  17. Click Save in the Manage Edits group.

    The new field is added to the attribute table and is visible on the Edit Features pane.

  18. Close the Fields view.

  19. Click on the Edit Feature pane, and see the new fields can be modified.
