Analyze a map

You can resolve known issues with drawing performance, display, or usability when authoring a map or scene with the Analyze Map pane. The Messages tab generates a list of potential display performance issues - much like a spell checker in a word processing program. Each issue includes a description and suggested solutions.

There are three types of issues listed in the Analyze Map pane, in order of priority:

  • Error - These issues must be fixed. The map cannot draw as authored due to missing resources or unresolved issues.

  • Warning - The map may function, but the issue could impact draw performance and should be fixed.

  • Message - Diagnostic or contextual information that does not imply a significant issue. Resolution is optional.

Analyze your map or scene

To analyze your map or scene, do the following:

  1. With a map or scene open, on the ribbon, click the Help tab. In the Performance group, click Analyze Map .

    The Analyze Map pane opens.

  2. In the pane, on the Messages tab, click Analyze.

A list of known issues (if any) are displayed. When a message is selected, a summary at the bottom of the pane gives additional information about the message, including the problem layer's name, a description of the issue, and its level of severity.

  3. Optionally type a message or layer name into the Search Analyzer Results bar or use the Show/Hide buttons for each issue type to filter the list.

Review messages

To review an analyzer error or warning, hover over the message and click the Options button that appears. (Alternatively, right-click the message.) A context menu provides a link to a help topic that describes the problem and lists available solutions. If necessary, you can select the layer in the Contents pane to identify and work with the problem layer.

In some instances, an issue exists on more than one layer in the map. On the context menu, click Expand Group, or click the arrow to expand the full list.

Tip:

If you double-click a message without opening the context menu, the help documentation is opened automatically.
