Add text and basic blocks
You can add text, buttons, separators, and code to your stories.
Add text
Narrative text is the foundation of a story and provides important context for briefings and frames. The types of text blocks that can be added to content created with ArcGIS StoryMaps include paragraphs, headings, lists, and quotes.
To add text to your ArcGIS StoryMaps content items, click the Add content button
or click inside text placeholder areas.
Format and convert text
Formatting text can add emphasis or provide depth to your narrative. In ArcGIS StoryMaps, you can format text in paragraphs, headings, lists, and quotes. Hyperlinking text can provide context and quick access to information sources or other reference materials. You can adjust the text size, align text blocks, and convert text blocks from one style to another. You can also indent list items.
Use the following steps to format text:
Highlight the text you want to format.
The text formatting toolbar appears.
From the toolbar, click the formatting options you want, or click a block on the drop-down menu to convert to another text block type.
Some text block types do not support all formatting options.
The selected text updates with the applied formats.
Tip:
Keyboard shortcuts allow you to quickly format text.
Format text color
You can change the text color to one of the recommended colors or a custom color. The recommended colors come from the theme. These colors change if you apply a different theme in the Design panel. If you have formatted text using one of the color chips and later apply a new theme, that text color will update to reflect a color from the new theme.
You can also pick any color for a text selection by entering a hex code or using the color picker tool. Text formatted using a custom color does not change if you apply a different theme. For convenience, the last used hex code may be available the next time you open the color picker. To reuse this color, click the color dot to apply the color to the selected text.
Note:
Color contrast is important for accessibility. When formatting text color, consider that some theme colors may provide better contrast than others. Test the story for accessibility before sharing it widely.

Click the Add content button ➕ to open the block palette.
Select Button.
A button is inserted.

Up to four buttons can be added in a row. To add multiple buttons in the same row, use the following steps.
Insert a button as described above.
Hover over the button and click the Add content button ➕ next to the current button.
Configure the new button as described above.

Optionally, repeat the steps above to add up to four buttons.
Add separators
Separators can be used to delineate a story's sections using a stylistic element.
To use a different separator, change the theme. To use your own separator, create a theme. For more information, see Create a theme.
Add code
Adding a code block can help you share code snippets and scripts. A block of code can be copied using the Copy code snippet button on the side of the code block.
Syntax highlighting can be added to code to more clearly indicate its structure and content. To change the language of the code, hover over the code block, click the Options button on the toolbar, and choose a language. You can also display line numbers by checking the Show line numbers check box.
Delete basic blocks
To delete a basic block, hover over it and click the Delete button.
