Create a collection

You can use ArcGIS StoryMaps to assemble collections, which are sets of ArcGIS StoryMaps items bundled for sharing. Collections can include your own stories as well as stories authored by others. Other items such as ArcGIS apps, media, and files can also be added to a collection as supporting content.

You can use collections in a variety of ways, such as telling a longer story in installments or chapters; gathering stories, apps, and items that share a common theme; or creating a portfolio of your work.

Use the following steps to assemble a collection:

  1. Sign in to ArcGIS StoryMaps.

  2. Click Create, and click Collection to create a collection and launch the collection builder.

The collection builder is where you assemble collections of ArcGIS StoryMaps items and other content.

  3. Add details to the cover.

    1. Add a title to the collection.

    2. Optionally, add a summary and edit the author name, if needed.

    3. Optionally, add a description.

The title and summary must be plain text and meet character limits. The description may be longer and contain formatted text, including links.

  4. Add content to the collection.

    1. Click Add to collection.

    2. Select one of the options: ArcGIS content, Image, Video, Embed, or PDF.

    3. Choose stories, apps, and files to add to the collection.

    Note:

Collections can have a maximum of 60 items.

  5. Optionally, customize item details.

    1. Hover over an item and click Settings.

    2. Edit the item's Title text or Thumbnail image.

  6. Optionally, change the display order of the items in the collection by dragging the item cards to the collection overview page.

  7. In the header, click Design to open the design panel.

The cover, navigation, and theme options in the design panel allow you to change the appearance of the collection. For more information, see Set a theme.

  8. Preview the collection.

    1. In the header, click Preview to open preview mode so you can view the collection as the audience will see it.

    2. Use the toolbar in the bottom corner of the screen to preview how the collection will look on different devices, such as tablets or phones.

    3. Return to the builder by closing preview mode using the toolbar in the bottom corner of the screen.

  9. Publish the collection.

    1. In the header, click Publish to open the publish page.

    2. On the publish page, select the audience.

    3. Click the Publish button to run the publishing process.

    Note:

The publishing process checks to ensure all maps and layers will be accessible to the audience. If issues are detected, you are prompted to address them before continuing. For more information, see Publish.

Your collection is now published and ready to be shared.
