Configure the app using the configuration wizard

After installing ArcGIS Documentation Center, the next step is to configure the app. When you start the app for the first time, a configuration wizard opens to help you choose settings for the application. You can modify these settings later in the app.

Steps

  1. Start ArcGIS Documentation Center.

The configuration wizard opens automatically the first time you start the app. If your are re-installing the app, the configuration wizard will not open automatically; instead, it will retain the settings you had previously chosen.

Descriptions of the settings are provided in the wizard.

  2. Choose the display language.

This is the language of the application interface. Later, when you download documentation sets, you can choose different languages for the documentation sets than the display language.

  3. Click Next.

  4. Choose the port numbers for the local server in order of preference.

A lightweight local server is included with ArcGIS Documentation Center to allow you to view documentation sets locally like web pages in your browser. You can choose up to three port numbers for the local server. The app will attempt to use the first port number you enter, but if that port is not available, it will try the next one, and so on. If none of the port numbers you entered are available, the app will automatically try to find an available port.

If all port numbers are the same, the app will only try that one port number, and then automatically find an available port if that one is not available.

  5. Click Next.

  6. Choose the root folder where documentation sets will be downloaded and accessed. Click Change the root folder to browse to a different location.

The default location for the root folder is Users\<username>\Documents\ArcGIS Documentation Center where <username> is your Windows username. You can change this to a different location on your machine or to a shared network location. If you intend to download doc sets to the root folder, ensure that you have permissions to access and modify files in that location.

Learn more about the root folder

  7. Click Finish.

    ArcGIS Documentation Center opens.

If the root folder you chose already contains documentation sets, they will appear on the Home tab. If the root folder is empty, click the Library tab to connect to Esri's online repository and download documentation sets.

To modify the settings you chose in the configuration wizard, click the Menu button and choose Settings. In Settings dialog box, you can also choose to use light or dark themes for the application.
