Copy and paste properties between raster layers

You can copy all or some raster layer properties from one layer and paste them to another layer in a map or between maps in a project. This can help you maintain consistency between items or adhere to organizational guidelines.

Note:

This topic applies to raster data models, such as raster layers, mosaic layers, and image service layers.

Understanding layer properties

A layer property controls properties such as symbology, pop-ups, charts, definition queries, mosaic rules, and processing templates. These properties can be copied between layers.

Copying properties between raster layers can help you adhere to schemas or other requirements. For example, if you have several raster layers that have the same schema but are from different data sources, you can configure one raster layer and copy its properties to the other raster layers, rather than configuring each layer manually.

When you copy properties from a source layer to a target layer, a notification message indicates when the properties are successfully pasted.

Inapplicable properties

A property is considered applicable if it can be copied to another raster layer. Depending on circumstances, you may be able to copy all, some, or none of the properties between layers. For example, most properties can be pasted between the same raster data model.

However, if the target layer is not the same raster data model as the source layer (raster layer to mosaic dataset, raster layer to image service layer, and so forth), a warning message may appear to indicate the paste could not be completed.

Copy all properties

To copy all applicable properties from one layer to another, complete the following steps:

  1. In an open map, in the Contents pane, right-click the source layer that contains the properties you want to copy, and choose Copy Copy properties.

    This copies the layer properties.

  2. In the Contents pane, right-click the target layer, point to Paste Properties, and choose All Properties All properties.

Copy a subset of properties

If you do not want to copy all properties, certain subset properties can be individually copied from the Contents pane.

Note:

When pasting properties from one raster data model to another raster data model, only Symbology will be an available subtype. When you choose All Properties to paste all of the properties to a different raster data model, all valid properties will be pasted.

To copy a subset of properties from one layer to another, complete the following steps:

  1. In an open map, in the Contents pane, right-click the source layer that contains the properties you want to copy, and choose Copy Copy properties.

  2. In the Contents pane, right-click the target layer and hover over the right arrow beside Paste Properties, to view a complete list of available property subsets to be copied:

    Symbology Symbology

All properties of the Symbology pane.

    Pop-ups Pop-ups

Pop-up status (enabled or disabled), title, text, charts, images, and Arcade expressions.

    Charts Charts

All charts and applicable properties in the Chart Properties pane. Newly pasted charts are appended to the target layer or table; existing charts are not deleted or overwritten.

    Definition Queries Definition Queries

All queries and applicable properties on the Definition Query tab of Layer Properties.

    Mosaic Rule Mosaic rule

The mosaic method, mosaic operator, and its properties as defined on the Mosaic tab of Layer Properties.

    Processing Templates Raster processing template

The Processing Templates used to generate on-the-fly information from a function chain.

  3. Choose the property you want to paste to the destination layer.

Limitations and considerations

Consider the following when planning to copy properties between raster data model layers:

  • You can only copy and paste properties between raster data models.

  • You can only copy symbology properties between layers that have the same symbology properties available.

  • You can only copy properties when one item is copied to the clipboard. An error may occur if multiple layers are copied simultaneously.

  • Properties that define the layer's identity—such as its name, data source, and metadata—are not copied.

  • You cannot copy properties to more than one layer at a time.

  • If a layer property is not part of the subset list, it can only be copied and pasted to another layer by selecting the All Properties option.
